Achieving improvements to the delivery of local economic development services was a key initial task for WI LEF.  Important improvements have been achieved including the elimination of overlap and duplication and the development of closer working relationships between the main agencies.  It is now time, however, for the LEF to move beyond these structural issues and to develop a strategically cohesive economic development strategy for the Western Isles

The key drivers for change in the Western Isles have been identified and agreed through the “Creating Communities of the Future” initiative.  That initiative, developed collaboratively by Western Isles Enterprise (WIE), Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES), sets out the medium to long-term development strategy to be pursued in the Western Isles.

This Economic Development Framework seeks to build on the initial “Creating Communities of the Future” concept by re-iterates the key drivers of change and putting in place a detailed set of actions in order to implement the strategy.  The plan also incorporates actions that the LEF believe to be essential to tackle local developmental challenges.
